Made for iPhone and iPod touch, ipico makes it incredibly easy to share favorite moments, from photos and videos, to movies and YouTube while on the go. The affordably priced ipico™ allows you to easily share videos, photos and movies in real time and project them larger than life on virtually any surface. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ - Building on its continued success in the digital optical market, General Imaging (GIC) today introduced ipico™, a sleek hand-held, projector with a patented pop-up connector that turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a genuine social media tool. At the same time, when watching from a distance, the drop in resolution is not as noticeable you might thing, and certainly does not render the image excessively blurry or unwatchable.GARDENA, Calif. Obviously, the same 960 x 540 pixel projected image is going to be a lot sharper at an image size of 5 inches diagonal than at 50 inches. Resolution of the ipico is 960 x 540 pixels, but how sharp an image actually is depends on how far away from the viewing surface the projector is. The unit I tested provided a quite viewable image of just about 50 inches in a slightly darkened room and a light-colored wall. General Image states an image size between 5 inches and 50 inches. Conversely, the further away from the viewing surface is, the larger the image will be. The further away from the viewing surface the projector is, the dimmer the image will be. The specs show a throw distance (how far away from the wall or screen the unit is) between 6.5 inches and 5.5 feet.

This slider also serves as a manual focus. Moving the slider towards the front of the projector turns the ipico on. With the slider positioned all the way to the rear, the ipico is off. There’s a slider on the right side panel of the unit.

The ipico comes with minimal documentation, though it took me only a minute or so to figure out how to use it.
A tiny LED on the left side of the projector blinks red as the device is charging, and turns green when the ipico is fully charged. The ipico does not come with a wall wart power supply. Charging is accomplished by plugging the other end of the USB cable into a USB port on a laptop or PC. General Imaging claims a battery life of up to 90 minutes, but I got just over an hour in my testing. This raises the dock into position, and also uncovers the micro USB port that’s needed to charge the unit’s Lithium Polymer battery. A dock containing the connector is located at the bottom of the projector, and needs to be pressed upward. The ipico itself is small, 1.89 inches wide, 4.44 inches long, and 0.67 inches thick. That means that the ipico will work the iPhone 3 through 4S, but not with the new iPhone 5, which uses a completely different connect than has been used in the past. The ipico isn’t embedded into an iPhone directly, but it is designed to be used only with Apple devices that employ the standard 30 pin iPhone/iPod Touch connector. 3M’s CP45 is a video camera which also contains a 20 lumen pico projector, and Samsung’s Galaxy Beam phone has a pico projector built in as well. Pico projectors are starting to pop up embedded in devices themselves.
